Specter Becomes Democrat

Arlen Specter rocked the political world when he announced he was switching parties and running as a Democrat in the 2010 election. The switch does give the Democrats a 59 seat majority in a 99 seat Senate, which is 59.5% of the seats. This does not give Democrats the ability to invoke cloture by all its members. Unless Norm Coleman is reelected from Minnesota, which seems unlikely, the Democrats will gain the 60 votes and the 60 percent necessary to invoke cloture.

Specter said, "I have traveled the State, talked to Republican leaders and office-holders and my supporters and I have carefully examined public opinion. It has become clear to me that the stimulus vote caused a schism which makes our differences irreconcilable. On this state of the record, I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate. I have not represented the Republican Party. I have represented the people of Pennsylvania."

So I changed the title to "It's Not So Black and White." I haven't decided if that's the final name or not, but I like it. I think it accurately describes everything in the world. Nothing is black or white. There's some shade of gray in there, no matter how little there might be.

Two TV stations going digital Tuesday

The analog to digital TV switchover was delayed to June 12 after a bill was signed by President Obama on Wednesday.

As previously reported on this news blog, some stations will be allowed to make the switch on Tuesday, February 17, and the only local stations that have decided to turn off their analog signal are WITF TV-33 and WLYH TV-15. If you use a TV antenna and have NOT hooked up a digital converter box to your TV, you will not be able to view the two stations starting sometime Tuesday.

Deadline nears for Linglestown waterline

The Village of Linglestown Committee met Thursday night to discuss the progress of adding a public waterline along Linglestown Road as part of a major roadway improvement project expected to start this summer.

Village committee members and Lower Paxton officials are looking for 60 property owners along Linglestown Road in the village to connect to the waterline, and 48 have committed to date.

Death of analog TV delayed

Today is your lucky day if you still use a TV antenna and haven't acquired a digital converter box – analog TV will be sticking around until June 12.

Congress sent a bill to President Obama's desk today that would push the digital switchover from February 17 to June 12, a move prompted by the TV Converter Box Coupon Program running out of money. Critics said 6.5 million people would be without TV if the switch took place on February 17. Our representative, Tim Holden of Schuylkill County, voted against delaying the transition.

Circuit City short-circuited

As you’ve probably heard by now, Circuit City is liquidating its inventory and will shutter all their stores in the near future. The national electronics retailer has two Harrisburg-area locations: Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg and Jonestown Road in Lower Paxton Twp. in the Paxton Towne Center.

Word of the store’s demise broke on Friday morning, and the Lower Paxton store was crawling with bargain shoppers Saturday morning. Many items were being sold for 10-percent off the marked price.

Mix-up at Linglestown eatery explained

Early this week a comment appeared on the Linglestown forum at PennLive.com that accused a Linglestown-area restaurant of ripping off customers by double charging them by hitting their credit-card accounts at the point of sale and a second time months later. (See thread #475)

Marsico set to start 11th term in Pa. House

Linglestown Gazette recently chatted via e-mail with state Rep. Ron Marsico, R-Lower Paxton Twp., to get the lowdown on his top issues for the new two-year legislative session that begins January 26. Marisco has served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 1988.

There's no surprise what's front and center on state Rep. Ron Marsico's priority list these days – the sour economy and a looming state budget deficit that is estimated to be as high as $2 billion. "Pennsylvania’s finances will be a top priority in the upcoming legislative session," said Marsico.
